boat

Another tough one. Trying to figure out how to make water. I think i'm going to have to do some research and look at other artist's work to learn it. Was going to finish the boats in the background, but way ran out of time. They are now telephone poles with strings =D

time: 1 hour 30 minutes

  1. Water's a tricky subject. I went to an optics lecture at SJSU by John Clapp and he explained that you treat water not as an object but as a medium. It basically interacts and distorts the objects around it. For example, in the picture you chose, it's acting as a mirror. You're not painting the water, you're painting the sky that's reflecting off the water. If you look closely at the water, it's simply just a mirror image of the sky above it.

When the water has ripples in it, they're called sky pools. A ripple can be divided in two planes. One plane is reflecting the sky, the other is reflecting the land. Anyways, water is kinda neat stuff. There's a lot more aspects of it than just reflection. It refracts and also saturates colors. More on that later though. =)
